Emily McDowell, a BOSS from the moment she wakes up in the morning!
We are pleased to introduce Emily McDowell
, our featured BOSS in this month's #GirlBossGiveaway! Emily McDowell started her company with one greeting card in 2013. That paved the way for innovative greeting cards and stationery products. Emily has the gift to tell it like it is in a fun, meaningful, human way; best sellers include phrases such as "I'm A Grown Ass Lady and I Do What I Want" and "Please Let Me Be The First To Punch The Next Person Who Tells You Everything Happens For A Reason."
Today, the Emily McDowell empire has expanded exponentially and includes textiles, stationery, mugs, pins and more! It's a treat to get to introduce you to another female founder who understands human relationships and makes must-have, funny products for real people!

If you were a Gumball Poodle sock, which one would you be?
More Cheese Please! I came to my love of cheese fairly late in life. I was in my 30s before I discovered that I liked it beyond just on pizza. I was a picky kid and now I basically eat everything, and a cheese plate is one of God's greatest gifts.
Grocery shopping is better with fun, reusable totes! Be good to the planet AND to yourself!
What’s at the top of your work playlist right now?
Tom Petty. A huge part of my youth.
No coasters? No problem! These napkins rule!
Any advice for future boss ladies and gentlemen?
Invest in proper accounting from day one, even though it feels expensive. It's worth it. Also, everything in our culture tells us that success is based on growth -- if your business model works, grow your company! Do more! But before you grow your company just because you can, think about what you love about your job. Will you still be able to do that if you grow? Do you enjoy managing people? How will growth affect your profits -- not revenue, but profits? What's your goal for the growth?
Boss Lady in action at the Emily McDowell HQ!
Who is another Boss Lady who influences and inspires you? Why?
Jen Bilik founded her gift company, Knock Knock, in 2002. She was originally the sole writer, designer, and CEO, and survived/solved countless entrepreneurship trials during the company's first ten years. Knock Knock is now a thriving organization of 35 people, and Jen has transitioned to a management role. She's one of the smartest people I know, and has been tremendously helpful to me.
- French Toast -- Under, but it depends on the bread and the recipe.
- Big Foot -- Overrated. Basically just a big monkey anyway.
- Heely Roller Shoes -- Way underrated.
